The December meeting was 'just between ourselves'. We exchanged cards, sang carols and recited Christmas poems. PP Rosemary O brought her guitar and led the singing. June had given us a book of Christmas poems so members chose their favourites to recite. We had a blind tasting of Stollen and members had to choose their favourites between samples from Morrisons, Sainsbury's and M&S. M&S won by a mile, maybe because it was laced with brandy! Full of Christmas spirit we greeted Santa who called in to hand out presents to members. Ho! Ho! Ho!
Our Autumn Fair was held at the Stained Glass Centre on October 15th. There were various stalls selling gifts, pre-loved clothes, cakes, jams, preserves and pickles, plants. We had a bottle draw and a raffle. The entrance ticket included coffee and biscuits and the lucky ticket holder won an Afternoon Tea voucher for the Stained Glass Centre. We raised £1335.00 and we are still selling dresses and gifts to customers who could not make it on the day so hopefully the figure raised will rise even higher. Members had worked really hard in the weeks leading up to the fair - baking, pickling, preserving, sorting clothes, growing plants donating and collecting. The hard work was worth it on the day. Thanks to Becky Martin and her staff at the Stained Glass Centre for donating and serving coffee and biscuits.
At our October meeting Rotarian Paul Hudson gave a fascinating talk about his life as an Opera Singer. Paul has sung in 640 operas all over the world throughout his career. Paul started his operatic career at the age of 15 years when he was accepted at the Huddersfield School of Music due to his bass voice at a young age. Paul sang opera with Pavarotti, Kiri Te Kanawar, Domingo, Carreras, Joan Sutherland and he has performed often for Royalty, the late Queen, the Queen Mother, Prince Charles. He has sung in French, Italian, German, Russian, which is no mean feat when it has to be an accurate translation.
Following Paul's talk President Jane inducted our newest member, Alicia Bennett,
Our twice monthly walking group has enjoyed lovely walks in the summer sunshine. We walked around Burton Riggs Nature Reserve and met dog walkers and young lads fishing. There were also lots of Canada Geese which came swimming over the lake whenever we stopped on the shore. Our walk took just over an hour and then we went for an enjoyable lunch at theByways.
We met at Cober Hill for our Friday Walk to the Cleveland Way at Cloughton. Another lovely day and a pleasant amble down the lane to the coast. The path along the coast was overgrown and so we sat on a couple of seats overlooking the sea and contemplated what to do. We retraced our steps to the 'secret garden' before walking to Cober Hill for lunch of jacket potatoes with salads and various fillings served by a very entertaining waiter.
June hosted a 'Party on the Hill' in Hutton Buscel on a lovely sunny afternoon in August. The tables were decorated beautifully with lace tablecloths, china cups and saucers, silver cutlery, flower arrangements, handcrafted roses containg little mottos. The garden was decorated with bunting and it looked welcoming with a lovely party atmosphere as guests arrived. June and her team had worked hard and everyone appreciated the lovely setting and the little details. Members were welcomed with a glass of Prosecco and Lynda and Anne B provided another celebratory glass to mark their 80th birthdays. Evelyn Laidlaw brought the delicious afternoon tea and Rosemary O had us singing along to her accompaniament on the guitar.
Today Roseanne and I delivered 104 Bra's to 'Bra Bank against Breast Cancer' they are extremely grateful. Thank you so much to everyone who donated. This is on going so please keep on saving them. I can take them any time from you. Not all the 104 are in this photo, but it gives you an idea of our Donation. Many thanks Lynda XXX
Christine and Richard held their famous Pimms Party at their lovely home. Members contributed plates of nibbles and Richard and Christine and Rosie kept the Pimms flowing throughout the afternoon. There was a raffle which helped towards raising £453 for Lincs to Nepal (£133 on the raffle and £320 on the door). We all had a lovely time with the men chatting in the summerhouse and the ladies socialising in the house. Many thanks to ISO Christine.
At the end of the Inner Wheel year on July 2nd Joint Presidents Rosemary and Sandra handed over the Presidential chain to incoming President Jane Bull. Jane thanked members for bestowing the honour and promised to do her best for them throughout the year. Her charity for the year is a local community charity SPARKS and President Jane named her Honoured Active Member as Margot Ball.
We were delighted to greet Pam Lyons from our sister club in Scarborough, Western Australia during her visit to the UK. Pam came to celebrate 100 years of Inner Wheel at the Manchester Convention and she stayed with her cousins in York and visited friends in Malvern. Pam extended her stay to join us at the District 4 90th celebrations in York on June 11th and then we brought her back to Scarborough to meet our club members. We held a social evening with Inner Wheel and Rotary Club members and enjoyed wine and nibbles and exchanged gifts. Pam handed us a donation from her Inner Wheel Club in Scarborough WA to support our club charities. We had a super evening and we were sorry to say goodbye to Pam when she returned to York. We do hope we meet Pam again in the future

We all wore a touch of red and celebrated the Chinese New Year at the Kam Sang Restaurant. It was a double celebration because Christine G has a special birthday coming up. President Sandra presented her with a lovely floral arrangement,
Lynda, Christine O, June and Roseanne had worked hard to give the club an evening to remember. 2024 is the year of the Dragon and we all wore a touch of red. Lynda looked fabulous in her red dress and Manchu hat. We sat with other members with the same sign of the Zodiac, so as a Rat I sat with other rats plus some dragons and a couple of sheep! There was an explanation of the Chinese horoscope on each table which was helpful. The banquet was excellent and we had a great variety of dishes. We all attempted to use our chopsticks with varying degrees of success.
Past President Jeannette Woodward was presented with a floral arrangement and card on her 90th Birthday. In return Jeannette brought a delicious Birthday cake to share with club members
New members Sally Frith and Diana Sign were inducted into the club at our February meeting by President Sandra and joint President Rosemary
Our members worked hard in preparation for the Autumn Fair this year. They collected and displayed pre-loved clothes, they baked delicious cakes, pies, traybakes, they preserve fruit and made pickles, they gathered gifts and then they set up their stalls at the Stained Glass Centre ready to welcome guests on Tuesday October 31st from 10-12noon. Becky Martin had offered the tea room to us for the morning and her staff served customers coffee/tea and biscuits. District 4 Chairman Christine Hines joined us and brought her contribution of a cake for the cake stall. Christine won a voucher for Afternoon Tea at the Stained Glass Centre in the ticket draw. We raised £1,150 in 2 hours which pleased us all and justified all the hard work.
We had a 'Reet grand' Yorkshire Day celebration at Liz B's home on August 1st. Entertainment's Officer Lynda dressed the part and worked hard with her committee to produce tasty Yorkshire Tea and entertainment throughout the afternoon. New member Ann C compiled a great Yorkshire Quiz. Pat, June and Christine read 'I am Yorkshire' and the afternoon ended with a rousing chorus of -On Ilkla' Mooar b'aht ' aat'.
The Clubs in District received a challenge from District 4 Membership Officer Pat Mirfield -to produce a 'Podcast'
We had to do a bit of research to find out what a podcast was and how to produce one. Luckily we meet at the Rugby club and Sharon and Charlie produce a regular podcast and were willing to let us take part in their next edition. What fun we had, - and as a bonus we won Pat's challenge and received a bundle of Spring flowering bulbs to plant at the Rugby Club to greet us when we arrive for our meetings next year.
Joint Presidents Sandra and Rosemary and Club correspondent Val telling Sharon and Charlie all about Inner Wheel.
The Community Fair is organised by Scarborough Rotary Cavaliers and takes place in Scarborough Main Street in August every year. This year we raised £340 selling bric-a-brac and handbags.
